Mission

Swain Qualla SAFE provides free, safe, and confidential services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Swain County and the Qualla Boundary. We support survivors through comprehensive victim support & advocacy, public education, and community partnerships while working to prevent violence and promote safety throughout our community.

Vision

A community where all individuals live free from violence, where survivors are supported, empowered, and able to thrive, and where domestic violence and sexual assault are prevented through education, awareness, and collective action.

24/7 Crisis Hotline – Call anytime for immediate support.

Emergency Shelter – A safe, clean, and secure place for you and your children.

Our story

Established in 1985, Swain Qualla SAFE has a longstanding history of providing essential support to survivors and advocating for lasting change. Recognizing a critical need in our community for inclusive, survivor-centered care, we expanded our services to ensure that every individual—regardless of gender, background, or circumstance—has access to safety, resources, and hope. For over four decades, we’ve continually evolved to meet our community’s needs, becoming a trusted partner and advocate in the fight against violence.

As the demand for services grows, SAFE is dedicated to expanding programs, securing additional funding, strengthening outreach efforts, and ensuring that no survivor is left without help or hope.

Swain Qualla SAFE, Inc., a nonprofit organization, was founded in response to community concerns in Spring 1984 and officially incorporated in 1985.

Today

Through passionate leadership, program development, and an unwavering commitment to survivors, SAFE has grown from its grassroots, kitchen-table beginnings into a professional and impactful agency. The organization now offers emergency shelter, advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling, and prevention education to individuals and families in need.

Sept. 1985

By August of that year, more than 20 women and children had found refuge in motels, safe homes, and out-of-county shelters. The immediate demand for assistance quickly exceeded SAFE’s initial resources. In response, the organization opened its emergency shelter in September 1985.

Our experienced and well-trained staff includes advocates, case managers, community educators, and support personnel—all deeply committed to helping survivors feel safe, supported, and respected. We provide free, safe, confidential services available 24/7, ensuring immediate assistance when it’s needed most.

Through strong partnerships with legal aid providers, hospitals, and advocacy groups, we ensure survivors have access to the resources needed to rebuild their lives.
